Youth Guarantee Scholarships: aged 16/17

Students:

  • Receive Free Training
  • Must enroll full time, for a full year training programme
  • Enroll to complete the National Certificate in Salon Support Level 3 (72 credits) and once achieved;
  • Can gain further level 3 credits

Waikato School of Hairdressing Ltd is contracted by the Tertiary Education Commission to provide Youth Guarantee to eligible young people.

This training is FREE to the student and may include a small travel allowance to assist you in getting to and from the course.  As all tuition fees are fully funded, students are not eligible to apply for student loans or allowances.

Students are expected to fully commit to all aspects of the training, take every training and employment opportunity made available to them and gain a suitable post-training outcome.  They must treat the training day as a work day and respect the requirements of this. 
Only valid absences are acceptable.  A minimum of 80% attendance is required to maintain enrolment. 

Eligibility Criteria

Are you:

  • Aged 16/17 at enrolment
  • A New Zealand citizen or permanent resident?
  • Living at home with financial support or financially independent
  • Ready to move beyond school but still want to study and learn practical skills
  • Serious about a hairdressing career

Students must:

  • Enroll to study full time
  • Enroll in a full year of training commencing at the beginning of each year and remaining enrolled and attending to the end of the year
  • Have a reasonable level of competence in English and Math’s
  • To meet legal and health requirements, candidates must be physically able to carry out the practical components of the programme.

All Youth Guarantee programmes have literacy and numeracy embedded in their delivery and a range of student support services will be available. Youth Guarantee students will be assessed using the National Literacy assessment tool.

Loans and Allowances

Because courses are free, students are not eligible for any financial assistance from Studylink.  This includes student loans, living expenses or student allowances.  If however, you turn 18 during the programme you can apply for some assistance if you meet Studylink criteria.

How to Apply

  • Complete the Enrolment form
  • Complete the Assessment form
  • Supply evidence of your date of birth (See below)
  • Original
  • Applications should be received by our office well before the programme start date.  The enrolment process must be fully complete
  • Late enrolments are accepted only on a case by case basis. 

You may be asked to attend an assessment day. 

We will be assessing you on:

  • Punctuality
  • Demonstrating appropriate behaviors
  • Positive attitude
  • Appropriate presentation for a student/trainee hairdresser (tidy clothing and hair, appropriate comfortable footwear – no jandals or sneakers, and no hoodies

Documentation

Prior to any enrolments being accepted you must supply the following documentation.

  • Evidence of your date of birth - either a passport or birth certificate.

For your travel allowance

  • Verified deposit slip for your bank account.  This must be stamped by the bank or a Bank statement
  • Exemption from school.  You will need to include a letter from us with your application.  Note:  that very few under 16’s are ever granted an exemption.

Note:  If you are aged 15 and wishing to attend an assessment day you have an extra requirement.  If you wish to attend on a day that would otherwise be a school day, the Ministry of Education requires that you bring with you a letter from your school that confirms you are allowed to attend.  If the day you wish to attend is not a school day e.g. school holidays you do not need to do this.

If you are aged 15 and already have an exemption from school, you must bring a letter from your current training provider verifying you can attend.  You can use the standard letter attached to your assessment form.
