Waikato School of Hairdressing operates a training salon that is open to the public. The purpose is to provide students with 'real client' experiences.
Appointments are essential.
To our valued clients:
Please be aware that your hair service is being performed by students who are in training. The salon experience should be a positive one for both the client and the students. The students are fully supervised. Expect that your service will take longer than if you went to a commercial salon.
Your patience and understanding is appreciated.
The training salon is not appropriate for children. Children must be supervised at all times.
Pricing
We charge minimum prices and by the amount of product used on your hair. We can not quote without seeing your hair and discussing your requirements.
Please ask to be advised of the price of your service before it commences.
Skin Patch testing
We have a strict policy of skin patch testing prior to every on-scalp colour including toners.
Although not common, allergic reactions can occur in people who have had no previous reactions.
From August 2007 all colour clients have been required to have a ‘Skin Patch Test’ to check for allergic reactions.
As we are a training centre it is our responsibility to ensure that we are following industry standards. Colour product manufacturers instructions require this test to be performed prior to every on scalp colour application.
This means that every time you wish to have an on-scalp colour in our training salon you will either:
- Have to come in 48 hours before your appointment and have this test applied. It only takes a couple of minutes); or have
- Applied a ‘Color Start Patch Test’ at home 48 hours before your appointment. We can send you one, you can collect one from us, or you will be given one at the end of each colour appointment.
- The Patch Test must be visible so that we can check it prior to starting your on-scalp colour service.
We have a strict Policy on this.
No Patch Test, No on-scalp colour, no exceptions.
The reactions we are checking for are: itching, swelling, redness and burning of the skin (rinse the area immediately with water) and in severe cases vomiting and respiratory distress.
We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you but are equally sure that you will appreciate the precautions we are taking to keep you safe from chemical reactions.
If you arrive for your appointment and haven’t had a Skin Patch Test, Please don’t be offended if we cannot perform your on-scalp colour service

Tuesday: 1-4
Wednesday 4.30 - 7.30
Thursday 9-4
The training salon operates in 'sessions'. Most services are booked at the start of a session e.g. 9am. Services such as cut and dry can sometimes be booked for later in a session.
